When physicists focus on questions coming directly from sports practitioners, they create a powerful bridge between fundamental science and athletic performance—enhancing both our understanding of human movement and the tools athletes use on the field to excel.
Since 2012, every Olympic year, a dedicated conference has brought together physicists passionate about sports to share their discoveries and explore how physical laws manifest in athletic performance.
Beginning in 2018, a new approach emerged motivated by the Paris 2024 Games: French researchers started gathering questions directly from and with athletes and coaches—seeking what truly mattered in their sport for them and what were their bottlenecks toward performance.
This first step enabled sport practitioners not only to be recipients but also active participants in the construction of the research results and of what could eventually lead to new sport physical laws.
This strategy has guided numerous research projects and was notably supported by the French National Research Agency and High-Performance Sport research grant. Among these initiatives is the Sciences2024 research program launched in 2018. This book tells the story of the program
through a brief illustrated comic, and presents 30 key research projects featured at the Sports Physics conferences of 2016, 2021, and 2024.
Highlighted on the cover are some of the major Sciences2024 projects across track cycling, rowing, running, sailing, and swimming—all with one goal: the Paris Games.
