Welcome Event and how to get there

The traditional (pre-)conference R&D Management Welcome Event and Registration will take place on Tuesday 6-10pm at École Polytechnique and we look forward to welcoming you there for a dinner cocktail in Polytechnique’s “Salon de Marbre” (Marble Hall).

Here are some instructions on how to make your way there. Please make sure you read all of them carefully.

As you might have noted from the shuttle schedule posted on the conference website, there are no shuttles departing on Tuesday to get to the Welcome Cocktail taking place at École Polytechnique (there will be, however, shuttles to take you back to Paris after the event).

This is for a very simple reason: travelling from Paris to the suburb at rush hour, the shuttles would get caught in heavy traffic (which has been exceptionally bad lately, because of an unusual number of roadworks in and around Paris), most likely taking over 1.5 hours to reach École Polytechnique (whereas shuttles the next morning will need around 30 min for the very same trip), unless they departed very early (i.e. before 4p.m., which would suit very few of you).

Consequently, we strongly recommend getting to the Welcoming Cocktail by public transportation (Shuttles will take you back to central Paris after the event).

If you intend to take a taxi/Uber, it is advisable that you leave central Paris at the latest at 4.15p.m., as otherwise it will take you a very long time to get there and you will face a hefty fare (€100+).

Getting to Polytechnique by public transportation is quite straightforward. Simply board the RER B (express regional train) southbound towards Saint-Rémy-les-Chevreuses, Massy-Palaiseau, or Orsay Ville.

There are five RER B stations in central Paris – Gare du Nord, Les Halles, Saint-Michel, Luxembourg, Port-Royal, Denfert-Rochereau, Cité Universitaire – and this line also connects Paris' two main airports – Charles de Gaule (CDG) and Orly (ORY).

If you are flying in Tuesday afternoon, we simply advise to make your way to the Welcome Cocktail with your luggage, as there will be shuttles to take you (and your luggage) back to Paris after the event.

If you are accommodated next to Place d’Italie, getting to RER B is easy: board metro Line 6 (the light green one) at Place d’Italie westward towards Charles de Gaulle Étoile and exit at the 4th stop (5 min ride), Denfert-Rochereau. Follow the signs “RER B Saint-Rémy-Lès-Chevreuses” and board any train heading to “Massy - Palaiseau”, “Saint-Rémy-Lès-Chevreuses” or “Orsay Ville”.

It is then a 15-20 minutes ride. Get off at Massy-Palaiseau.  Leave the platform by taking the overhead bridge (located towards the middle of the train). The conference team (wearing light blue t-shirts with the conference logo) will be waiting for you and will assist you with making your way to the Polytechnique campus (under 10 min by bus).

A couple of additional important points to take note of:
– Massy-Palaiseau is located in zone 4 of Grand Paris, so you will need a dedicated ticket (regular tube/metro tickets are only valid in central Paris zones 1-2).
– On RER B line, there is a station named “Lozère – École Polytechnique”. While this indeed enables you to get to the campus, we advise against getting off at this station, as it entails a steep 15-20min walk uphill (75m slope, around 300 steps).

We look forward to welcome you at École Polytechnique on Tuesday evening,

Best regards,

The R&D Management Conference 2019 Organisation Committee
