Master HEP

Programme du M2 à l'École polytechnique (2023-2024)

Ce programme vaut pour l'année académique 2023-2024.

Tous les cours seront enseignés en anglais. C'est pourquoi, le reste de la page est en anglais.

Semester 1

Mandatory courses for students who have not followed the course during the M1:

Electroweak interactions (4 ECTS) [equivalent to the Standard Model of Electroweak Interactions course offered at ETH]
Quantum chromodynamics (4 ECTS) [equivalent to the Quantum Chromodynamics course offered at ETH]
Methods of statistical analysis and simulation (4 ECTS)
Experiments and detector physics (4 ECTS) [equivalent to the Experimental Methods and Instruments of Particle Physics course offered at ETH]
Quantum field theory 2 (4 ECTS) [equivalent to the QFT II course offered at ETH]

Optional courses to be chosen in the following set:

Cosmology (4 ECTS)
Quantum field theory 3 (4 ECTS)
Hadron collider physics (4 ECTS)
Neutrino physics (4 ECTS)
Astroparticles and astrophysics (4 ECTS)
Aspects of Beyond the Standard Model physics (4 ECTS)
Physics of future lepton colliders (2 ECTS)
Gravitational waves (2 ECTS)

Students are free to construct their program according to their interests, but must comply with the following constraints:

  • all students must have followed the 5 first courses above either as part of their M1 or as part of their M2;
  • students who are not involved in the joint master (i.e. who did not take the M1 courses at ETH Zürich) must comply with the rules governing Master's studies at IP Paris, which require the validation of at least 60 ECTS per year, well-balanced between the two semesters. This rule is replaced by the following more flexible one for the students of the joint master (and only for them): 120 ECTS must be validated over the two years; among them, at least 55 must be validated in each institution.
  • if a course offered at IP Paris has already been validated as part of the M1 (example: QFT2), it can be taken again, but the credits cannot be taken into account a second time.

Programs built with courses that sum up to more than 30 ECTS are also possible (and encouraged). In that case, only exams among the optional courses with the best grades will be taken into account.

Semester 2

Optional course:

String theory (3 ECTS)

Master's thesis (30 ECTS)

The Master's thesis will allow students to conduct research on their own, in a well structured way and on an advanced level. The topic of the Master thesis will be in the domain of High Energy Physics. It will last for 4 to 5 months depending on the optional courses taken.
