Metals, MDPI, 2016, 6 (12), pp.320. Efficient laser shock processing of materials requires a good characterization of their dynamic response to pulsed compression, and predictive numerical models to simulate the thermomechanical processes governing this response. Due to the extremely high strain rates involved, the kinetics of these processes should be accounted for. In this paper, we present an experimental investigation of the dynamic behavior of iron under laser driven ramp loading, then we compare the results to the predictions of a constitutive model including viscoplasticity and a thermodynamically consistent description of the bcc to hcp phase transformation expected near 13 GPa. Both processes are shown to affect wave propagation and pressure decay, and the influence of the kinetics of the phase transformation on the velocity records is discussed in details. • Laser amplification via stimulated Brillouin scattering in the strongly coupled regime : towards control and optimization
    • Chiaramello Marco
, 2016. The use of plasma as an amplification medium is currently discussed because it can overcome current solid-state technology limitations in terms of maximum achievable intensity. Via parametric scattering off a plasma oscillation the energy from a long pump pulse can be transferred into a short seed pulse. Brillouin scattering has the potential to become a robust amplification process. In this thesis we present theoretical and numerical (PIC) studies aimed at better understanding the role of each plasma parameter on the amplification mechanism: the interaction length, the shape of the density profile, the duration of the long pump signal, the relative delay between the seed and pump signals, the chirp of the long pump laser pulse. For the first time we show complete description of the time and space evolution of the phases of the pump, seed and plasma density perturbation that dictate the energy flow transfer between the pump and seed laser beams and the efficiency of amplification. In order to propose and improve nowadays experimental set-ups, a comparison with recent experiments is performed. (10.70675/38bea0d7zb8f1z4bebz9e61zd040fa5bd498)

    • Do Alexandre
(10.70675/090b60e8z0d2cz4489zbba2zaa7ce9fb0c11)

Physical Review A, American Physical Society, 2016, 94 (3). We present an effective-medium model for a subwavelength periodically patterned metallic layer, its cavities being filled with a nonlinear dielectric material, which accounts for both the linear and second-order behavior. The effective nonlinear susceptibility for the homogenized layer is driven by the nonlinearity of the dielectric material and by the geometrical parameters, thus leading to much higher susceptibility than existing materials. This leads to a huge enhancement of nonlinear processes when used together with resonances. Furthermore, multiple resonances are taking place in the metallic cavities and we investigate the mode-matching situations for frequency conversion processes and show how it enhances further their efficiency. Nature Communications, Nature Publishing Group, 2016, 7 (1). Astrophysical flows exhibit rich behaviour resulting from the interplay of different forms of energy-gravitational, thermal, magnetic and radiative. For magnetic cataclysmic variable stars, material from a late, main sequence star is pulled onto a highly magnetized (B410 MG) white dwarf. The magnetic field is sufficiently large to direct the flow as an accretion column onto the poles of the white dwarf, a star subclass known as AM Herculis. A stationary radiative shock is expected to form 100-1,000 km above the surface of the white dwarf, far too small to be resolved with current telescopes. Here we report the results of a laboratory experiment showing the evolution of a reverse shock when both ionization and radiative losses are important. We find that the stand-off position of the shock agrees with radiation hydrodynamic simulations and is consistent, when scaled to AM Herculis star systems, with theoretical predictions. New Journal of Physics, Institute of Physics: Open Access Journals, 2016, 18, pp.073048. Broadband amplification employing stimulated Raman backscattering is demonstrated. Using seed pulses with a bandwidth of about 200 nm, we study the amplification in a wide spectral range in a single laser shot. With chirped pump pulses and a Ne gas jet, we observed under optimized conditions, amplification in a range of about 80 nm, which is sufficient to support the amplification of sub-20 fs pulses. This broad amplification range is also in excellent agreement with PIC simulations. The conversion efficiency is at certain wavelengths as high as 1.2% and was measured to be better than 6×10 −3 on average. (10.1088/1367-2630/18/7/073048)

Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, National Academy of Sciences, 2016. Investigation of the iron phase diagram under high pressure and temperature is crucial for the determination of the composition of the cores of rocky planets and for better understanding the generation of planetary magnetic fields. Here we present X-ray diffraction results from laser-driven shock-compressed single-crystal and polycrystalline iron, indicating the presence of solid hexagonal close-packed iron up to pressure of at least 170 GPa along the principal Hugoniot, corresponding to a temperature of 4,150 K. This is confirmed by the agreement between the pressure obtained from the measurement of the iron volume in the sample and the inferred shock strength from velocimetry deductions. Results presented in this study are of the first importance regarding pure Fe phase diagram probed under dynamic compression and can be applied to study conditions that are relevant to Earth and super-Earth cores.
Scientific Reports, Nature Publishing Group, 2016, 6, pp.26402. Understanding Warm Dense Matter (WDM), the state of planetary interiors, is a new frontier in scientific research. There exists very little experimental data probing WDM states at the atomic level to test current models and those performed up to now are limited in quality. Here, we report a proof-of-principle experiment that makes microscopic investigations of materials under dynamic compression easily accessible to users and with data quality close to that achievable at ambient. Using a single 100 ps synchrotron x-ray pulse, we have measured, by K-edge absorption spectroscopy, ns-lived equilibrium states of WDM Fe. Structural and electronic changes in Fe are clearly observed for the first time at such extreme conditions. The amplitude of the EXAFS oscillations persists up to 500 GPa and 17000 K, suggesting an enduring local order. Moreover, a discrepancy exists with respect to theoretical calculations in the value of the energy shift of the absorption onset and so this comparison should help to refine the approximations used in models. Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, IOP Publishing, 2016, 58 (3), pp.034021. We present a Vlasov, i.e. a kinetic Eulerian simulation study of nonlinear collisionless ion-acoustic shocks and solitons excited by an intense laser interacting with an overdense plasma. The use of the Vlasov code avoids problems with low particle statistics and allows a validation of particle-in-cell results. A simple, original correction to the splitting method for the numerical integration of the Vlasov equation has been implemented in order to ensure the charge conservation in the relativistic regime. We show that the ion distribution is affected by the development of a turbulence driven by the relativistic 'fast' electron bunches generated at the laser-plasma interaction surface. This leads to the onset of ion reflection at the shock front in an initially cold plasma where only soliton solutions without ion reflection are expected to propagate. We give a simple analytical model to describe the onset of the turbulence as a nonlinear coupling of the ion density with the fast electron currents, taking the pulsed nature of the relativistic electron bunches into account.
