[1] S. Depierreux, D.T. Michel et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 103, 115001, (2009) [2] D.T. Michel et al., Phys. Rev. , 2011, 275, pp.402-403. Within the framework of laboratory astrophysics, we form a qualified multidisciplinary group in radiative hydrodynamics. Since 10 years, we have developed laboratory experiments as radiative shocks and plasma jets in connection to astrophysics. Such laboratory experiments provide a unique opportunity to validate models and numerical schemes introduced in radiative hydrodynamics codes. Here we summarize our experimental researches about plasma jets. Laboratory astrophysical experiments have been performed using LULI2000 (France), VULCAN (UK) and GEKKO XII (Japan) intense lasers. The goal of these experiments is to investigate some of the complex features of jets from Young Stellar Objects (YSO), and in particular its interaction with the interstellar medium (ISM). Applied Physics B - Laser and Optics, Springer Verlag, 2010, 101 (4), pp.753-759. We present a new method to generate ultra-short X-ray laser pulses by using the recently demonstrated laser-driven betatron source to photo-pump inner-shell transitions. The proposed compact set-up will then open the route to a wide range of applications. The betatron spectrum and ion-population kinetics are modeled and the temporal evolution of the gain coefficient for the K-α transitions is assessed. Using measured values of divergence, duration, and number of photons per pulse of the betatron source as input parameters, local gain values close to 60 cm^−1 are calculated for nitrogen at 3.2 nm. Significant gain values are also numerically obtained at shorter wavelengths (for neon at 1.5 nm) when the betatron energy distribution is optimized as suggested by recent laser wakefield electron acceleration experiments. Physical Review Letters, American Physical Society, 2010, 105, pp.015005. We have analyzed the coupling of ultraintense lasers (at 2 1019 W=cm2) with solid foils of limited transverse extent (10 s of m) by monitoring the electrons and ions emitted from the target. We observe that reducing the target surface area allows electrons at the target surface to be reflected from the target edges during or shortly after the laser pulse. This transverse refluxing can maintain a hotter, denser and more homogeneous electron sheath around the target for a longer time. Consequently, when transverse refluxing takes places within the acceleration time of associated ions, we observe increased maximum proton energies (up to threefold), increased laser-to-ion conversion efficiency (up to a factor 30), and reduced divergence which bodes well for a number of applications. , 2011, 271, pp.2035. Opacity calculations are basic ingredients of stellar modelling. They play a crucial role in the interpretation of acoustic modes detected by SoHO, COROT and KEPLER. In this review we present our activities on both theoretical and experimental sides. We show new calculations of opacity spectra and comparisons between eight groups who produce opacity spectra calculations in the domain where experiments are scheduled. Real differences are noticed with real astrophysical consequences when one extends helioseismology to cluster studies of different compositions. Two cases are considered presently: (1) the solar radiative zone and (2) the beta Cephei envelops. We describe how our experiments are performed and new preliminary results on nickel obtained in the campaign 2010 at LULI 2000 at Polytechnique. (10.1088/1742-6596/271/1/012035)

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, IOP Publishing, 2010, 43 (17), pp.175202. The present paper is an experimental study of a pulsed filamentary plasma discharge inside liquid water in pin to plane electrode configuration. Time resolved electrical and imaging diagnostics have been performed. The initiation and the propagation of the discharge have been studied for several experimental parameters. The propagation is continuous and is followed by reilluminations at low water conductivity. The measured propagation velocity of the plasma discharge is 30km/s for the secondary positive mode. This velocity was found to be surprisingly constant whatever the experimental parameters and especially as a function of the water conductivity. (10.1088/0022-3727/43/17/175202)

New Journal of Physics, Institute of Physics: Open Access Journals, 2010, 12 (4), pp.045017. We use two-dimensional (2D) particle-in-cell simulations to study the interaction of short-duration, moderately relativistic laser pulses with sub-micrometric dense hydrogen plasma slabs. Particular attention is devoted to proton acceleration by the target normal sheath mechanism. We observed that improved acceleration due to relativistic transparency of the target is unlikely for the shortest pulses, even for ultra-thin (~10 nm) targets. This mechanism would require either longer pulses or higher laser intensities. As the target density and thickness, pulse length, duration and polarization are varied, we see clear relationships between laser irradiance, hot electron temperature and peak proton energy. All these explain why, at a given incident laser energy level, the highest proton energy is not always obtained for the shortest-duration, highest-intensity pulse. (10.1088/1367-2630/12/4/045017)

  • Amplified Spontaneous Emission and Thermal Management on a High Average-Power Diode-Pumped Solid-State Laser – The Lucia Laser System
    • Albach Daniel
, 2010. The development of the laser triggered the birth of numerous fields in both scientific and industrial domains. High intensity laser pulses are a unique tool for light/matter interaction studies and applications. However, current flash-pumped glass-based systems are inherently limited in repetition-rate and efficiency. Development within recent years in the field of semiconductor lasers and gain media drew special attention to a new class of lasers, the so-called Diode Pumped Solid State Laser (DPSSL). DPSSLs are highly efficient lasers and are candidates of choice for compact, high average-power systems required for industrial applications but also as high-power pump sources for ultra-high intense lasers. The work described in this thesis takes place in the context of the 1 kilowatt average-power DPSSL program Lucia, currently under construction at the ‘Laboratoire d'Utilisation des Laser Intenses' (LULI) at the Ecole Polytechnique, France. Generation of sub-10 nanosecond long pulses with energies of up to 100 joules at repetition rates of 10 hertz are mainly limited by Amplified Spontaneous Emission (ASE) and thermal effects. These limitations are the central themes of this work. Their impact is discussed within the context of a first Lucia milestone, set around 10 joules. The developed laser system is shown in detail from the oscillator level to the end of the amplification line. A comprehensive discussion of the impact of ASE and thermal effects is completed by related experimental benchmarks. The validated models are used to predict the performances of the laser system, finally resulting in a first activation of the laser system at an energy level of 7 joules in a single-shot regime and 6.6 joules at repetition rates up to 2 hertz. Limitations and further scaling approaches are discussed, followed by an outlook for the further development.

Acta Crystallographica Section A : Foundations of Crystallography [1968-2013], International Union of Crystallography, 2010, 66 (Pt 2), pp.189-97. Fast and ultra-fast time-resolved diffraction is a fantastic tool for directly observing the structural dynamics of a material rearrangement during the transformation induced by an ultra-short laser pulse. The paper illustrates this ability using the dynamics of photoinduced molecular switching in the solid state probed by 100 ps X-ray diffraction. This structural information is crucial for establishing the physical foundations of how to direct macroscopic photoswitching in materials. A key feature is that dynamics follow a complex pathway from molecular to material scales through a sequence of processes. Not only is the pathway indirect, the nature of the dynamical processes along the pathway depends on the timescale. This dictates which types of degrees of freedom are involved in the subsequent dynamics or kinetics and which are frozen or statistically averaged. We present a recent investigation of the structural dynamics in multifunctional spin-crossover materials, which are prototypes of molecular bistability in the solid state. The time-resolved X-ray diffraction results show that the dynamics span from subpicosecond molecular photoswitching followed by volume expansion (on a nanosecond timescale) and additional thermoswitching (on a microsecond timescale). Physical Review E : Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics [2001-2015], American Physical Society, 2010, 81, pp.016406. A very fast method to account for charged particle dynamics effects in calculations of spectral line shape emitted by plasmas is presented. This method is based on a formulation of the frequency fluctuation model ﰒFFMﰓ, which provides an expression of the dynamic line shape as a functional of the static distribution of frequencies. Thus, the main numerical work rests on the calculation of the quasistatic Stark profile. This method for taking into account ion dynamics allows a very fast and accurate calculation of Stark broadening of atomic hydrogen high-n series emission lines. It is not limited to hydrogen spectra. Results on helium-ﰟ and Lyman-ﰠlines emitted by argon in microballoon implosion experiment conditions compared with experimental data and simulation results are also presented. The present approach reduces the computer time by more than 2 orders of magnitude as compared with the original FFM with an improvement of the calculation precision, and it opens broad possibilities for its application in spectral line-shape codes.

Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (1998-2015), American Physical Society, 2010, 82, pp.174102. High-power laser shots were performed on 100- m-thick iron foils, leading to shock loading pressures ranging from about 100 to 300 GPa. Free surface velocities were measured by interferometry. Ejected fragments recovered on polycarbonate shields were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. Particle-size distributions were extracted from backscattered electrons images. These distributions, as well as the morphologies of fragments and the values of the tensile strength, change abruptly with increasing laser intensity. One-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations were performed in order to interpret these evolutions. By comparison with recent static measurements and calculations of the iron phase diagram, the BLF Bushman, Lomonosov and Fortov equation of state was inferred to provide more realistic predictions than SESAME 2150 at the highest pressures investigated. The calculated decompression paths show that spall fracturation took place in the solid state, either in or in iron, this phase difference being the simplest hypothesis for explaining the changes observed in the fragmentation behavior. JETP Letters, Springer Verlag, 2010, 90 (10), pp.647-650. A new expression for the Stark profiles of spectral lines in plasma has been obtained by the method of the kinetic equation taking into account the dynamics of the plasma microfield. The result represents a dynamic line profile in the form of simple functionals of a static profile. The relation of the new solution with the known fluctuatingﰀfrequency method has been analyzed. It has been shown that this method is a discrete analog of the method of the kinetic equation and passes to the latter method in the limit of the continuous fluctuations. Simple formulas (4), (5), and (21) for dynamic line profiles provide ultrafast calculations of the profiles of spectral lines taking into account the dynamics of the plasma microfield. EPL - Europhysics Letters, European Physical Society / EDP Sciences / Società Italiana di Fisica / IOP Publishing, 2010, 91, pp.37005. We report transport measurements using pulsed magnetic fields to suppress the superconducting fluctuations (SCF) conductivity in a series of YBa2Cu3O6+x samples. These experiments allow us altogether to measure the temperature T'(c) at which SCF disappear, and the pseudogap temperature T*. While the latter are consistent with previous determinations of T*, we find that T'(c) is slightly larger than similar data taken by Nernst measurements. A careful investigation near optimal doping shows that T* becomes smaller than T'(c), which is an unambiguous evidence that the pseudogap cannot be assigned to preformed pairs. Studies of the incidence of disorder on both T'(c) and T* allow us to propose a phase diagram including disorder which explains most observations done in other cuprate families, and to discuss the available knowledge on the pseudogap line in the phase diagram. Nature Physics, Nature Publishing Group [2005-....], 2010, 6 (12), pp.1010-1016. Attraction and fusion between co-propagating light beams, mutually coherent or not, can take place in nonlinear media as a result of the beam power modifying the refractive index of the medium. In the context of high-power light beams, induced modifications of the beam patterns could potentially impact many topics, including long-range laser propagation, the study of astrophysical colliding blast waves and inertial confinement fusion. Here, through experiments and simulations, we show that in a fully ionized plasma, which is a nonlinear medium, beam merging can take place for high-power and mutually incoherent beams that are initially separated by several beam diameters. This is in contrast to the usual assumption that this type of interaction is limited to beams separated by only one beam diameter. This effect, which is orders of magnitude more significant than Kerr-like nonlinearity in gases, demonstrates the importance of potential cross-talk amongst multiple beams in plasma. High Energy Density Physics, Elsevier, 2010, 6, pp.210-214. The melting curve and equation of state of iron and iron alloys at the inner core boundary (330 GPa, about 5000 K) are still unknown. This severally limits current modelling of earth constitution and dynamics. In this paper, recent numerical and experimental studies performed using laser generated isentropic ramp compression on iron and aluminium samples are presented. On the experimental side, direct laser ramp compression was achieved on iron. Time-resolved measurements were compared to hydrodynamic computations accounting for the polymorphic phase transformations. Before studying iron that presents a solid-solid phase transition along the isentropic path, we studied the time evolution of the atomic structure of aluminium using molecular dynamics simulations at the same length and time scales as the experiment. Like many metals, aluminium presents an elasto-plastic phase transition and we studied, using this microscopic approach, the effect of plasticity on the backward integration technique used to extract equation of state information from the experimental VISAR signal. High Energy Density Physics, Elsevier, 2010, 6, pp.368-380. In this work scaling laws in laboratory astrophysics are studied. It is shown that mathematical models governing radiation hydrodynamics-driven phenomena are invariant under the homothetic group transformation and can be rescaled according to several types of scaling laws. This property is valid for both optically thick and optically thin materials and it allows a correct and rigorous connection between astrophysical objects or phenomena and laboratory experiments. This approach is applied to astrophysical jets and radiative shocks where advantages as well as difficulties are pointed out. (10.1016/j.hedp.2010.03.001)
