Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, IOP Publishing, 2008, 50 (12), pp.124007. We discuss the two mechanisms involved in high-order harmonic generation from plasma mirrors, which can be clearly identified in numerical simulations: the coherent wake emission (CWE) and the relativistic oscillating mirror (ROM) processes. Using high-contrast multi-terawatt ultrashort laser pulses, harmonics originating from these two processes can also be distinguished experimentally. (10.1088/0741-3335/50/12/124007)

Physical Review E : Statistical, Nonlinear, and Soft Matter Physics [2001-2015], American Physical Society, 2008, 78 (4), pp.046404. We present the results of an experimental investigation of the temporal evolution of plasmas produced by high power laser irradiation of various types of target materials (at intensities I_L<=10^14 W/cm^2). We obtained interferometric data on the evolution of the plasma profile, which can directly be compared to analytical models and numerical simulations. For aluminum and plastic targets, the agreement with 1D simulations done with the hydrocode MULTI is excellent, at least for large times (t>=400 ps). In this case, simulations also show that the effect of radiation transport is negligible. The situation is quite different for gold targets for which, in order to get a fair agreement, radiation transport must be taken into account. (10.1103/PhysRevE.78.046404)

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, IOP Publishing, 2008, 50 (11), pp.115007. We studied the process of laser beam homogenization in a gas medium placed in front of a thin metallic foil. Experiments were performed using the Prague PALS iodine laser working at 0.44 µm wavelength and irradiances of about 10^15 W cm^−2. Homogenization was detected both by directly analysing the transmitted laser beam and by studying the shock breakout on the foil rear side. Results show that the gas ionization by the laser pulse induces a strong refraction and produces an effective smoothing of large-scale intensity non-uniformities. (10.1088/0741-3335/50/11/115007)

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, IOP Publishing, 2008, 50 (10), pp.105013. We present the results of an experimental investigation of the temporal evolution of plasmas produced by high power laser irradiation of various types of target materials. We obtained 'high-quality' interferometric data on the evolution of the plasma electronic profile, which can be directly compared with analytical models and numerical simulations. For aluminium and plastic targets, the agreement with 1D simulations performed with the hydrocode MULTI is excellent, at least for large times (t ≥ 400 ps). In this case, simulations also show that the effect of radiation transport is negligible. The situation is quite different for gold targets for which, in order to get a fair enough agreement, we must take radiation transport into account. (10.1088/0741-3335/50/10/105013)

Physical Review D, American Physical Society, 2008, 78 (3), pp.032013 [11 pages]. In this paper, we present the final results of our experiment on photon-axion oscillations in the presence of a magnetic field, which took place at LULI (Laboratoire pour l'Utilisation des Lasers Intenses, Palaiseau, France). Our null measurement allowed us to exclude the existence of axions with inverse coupling constant $M>9.\times 10^5$ GeV for low axion masses and to improve the preceding BFRT limits by a factor 3 or more for axion masses $1.1\, \mbox{meV} (10.1103/PhysRevD.78.032013)

Physical Review Letters, American Physical Society, 2008, 100 (10), pp.105006. The dynamics of plasma electrons in the focus of a petawatt laser beam are studied via measurements of their x-ray synchrotron radiation. With increasing laser intensity, a forward directed beam of x rays extending to 50 keV is observed. The measured x rays are well described in the synchrotron asymptotic limit of electrons oscillating in a plasma channel. The critical energy of the measured synchrotron spectrum is found to scale as the Maxwellian temperature of the simultaneously measured electron spectra. At low laser intensity transverse oscillations are negligible as the electrons are predominantly accelerated axially by the laser generated wakefield. At high laser intensity, electrons are directly accelerated by the laser and enter a highly radiative regime with up to 5% of their energy converted into x rays. (10.1103/PhysRevLett.100.105006)

Physical Review Letters, American Physical Society, 2008, 100 (8), pp.089401. In [Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 103902 (2007)], Tarasevitch et al. demonstrate the existence of two generation mechanisms for laser high-order harmonics from overdense plasmas. One of these mechanisms leads to harmonics with frequencies up to the maximum plasma frequency of the target and occurs even at nonrelativistic laser intensities. We show that the mechanism responsible for these harmonics is coherent wake emission (CWE), a process that significantly differs from thequalitative model proposed by these authors, and it leads toa different interpretation of several essential features of this emission. Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, IOP Publishing, 2008, 50, pp.4039. In this paper, three different experimental configurations designed to study jet propagation physics are presented. Each configuration uses a different target design: conical dimples in solid surfaces, hollow cones filled with foam and angled thin foils. When irradiated with a laser, these targets result in the launching of a plasma jet, the properties of which can be controlled by judicious choices of the target and laser parameters. Experimental results from these targets are shown, and the physics which may be studied with each of these targets is briefly discussed. (10.1088/0741-3335/50/12/124039)

Radiation Effects and Defects in Solids, Taylor & Francis, 2008, 163 (4 - 6), pp.307 - 315. We present the experimental results, and their analysis, connected to the possibility to control laser inhomogeneities exploiting the non-uniform electron density distribution created by the laser while propagating in a gas jet. The induced self-refraction in the plasma created in the gas medium results in re-distributing local over-intensities over larger surfaces. The experiment at the PALS laser facility has been performed creating a large non-uniformity by a wedge arrangement and recording the static and dynamic images with and without the coupling to an Al target.
