By contrast, this track explores how R&amp;D and associated innovation processes are closely coupled to particular technologies. With their own characteristics and internal logics, individual technologies set the context for innovation and influence many dimensions of the innovation process, for example: timescales, research methods, skills requirements, financing requirements, risks, international topologies and information flows.</p> <p>A particular focus will be with emerging ‘deep tech’ or ‘frontier technologies’ such as: machine learning, AI, big data, nanotechnology, additive manufacturing and the Internet of Things. These new technologies – with their specific characteristics – are expected to impact both how innovation is organised and how it is executed: ‘innovation in innovation’.</p> <p>Papers are encouraged that concentrate on one or more specific technologies, identified at a sufficient level of granularity that their distinct characteristics can be appreciated. In this respect, it may be necessary to go beyond some of the commonly used categories such as ‘nanotechnology’ to more finely grained categories such as ‘nanomachines’.</p> <p>For example, the branch of AI known as ‘deep learning’ is based on the use of multi-layer neural networks, which in turn need to be trained on a large data set. Such data sets have to be either generated from scratch or obtained from existing sources. The technology developers may not have in-house access to such data. The need for training data therefore fundamentally drives the innovation relationships or collaborations necessary for the technology to be developed. However, not all AI approaches are so dependent on training data. Looking at the technology only at the aggregated level of AI could miss insights that are important to theory, policy and practice.</p> <p>As well as currently emerging new technologies, the track is open to papers that explore past examples of new technologies that have shaped innovation practices.</p> <p>Finally, the track will also welcome papers that conceptualise or take an overview of the relationship between new technologies, R&amp;D and innovation.</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/field--node--body.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--uid--page-article.html.twig x field--node--uid.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--uid.html.twig * field--entity-reference.html.twig * field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--uid.html.twig' --> <span> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'username' --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/user/username.html.twig' --> <span lang="" about="/rdmanagement2019/users/elodiegigout" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">elodie.gigout</span> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/user/username.html.twig' --> </span> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--uid.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--created--page-article.html.twig x field--node--created.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--created.html.twig * field--created.html.twig * field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--created.html.twig' --> <span> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'time' --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/time.html.twig' --> ven 01/03/2019 - Yet, scientific commercialisation or innovation is an important – but often underused – force for the respective national economies as well as the global market. Studies have shown that particularly the early phase of innovation – the fuzzy front end – is key in managing successful innovations in companies. Yet, this transition phase from science into innovation is understudied in the field of academic research. We therefore offer a paper track that places focus on understanding the fuzzy front end and the related mechanisms that trigger or hinder the transfer of scientific knowledge into innovation both on the level of individuals and organisations within and across countries.</p> <p>Research organisations still struggle to commercialize their technologies. The transition between (basic) research and the commercialization of research often fails. This phenomenon is called the ‘Valley of death’ and is known as the phase where potential inventions and discoveries go to die. In the context of research organisations it is also called the ‘research valley of death’ or the ‘translation gap’ and focusses on challenges of research organisations in this phase. In contrast to the valley of death (VoD) within the company context, universities face the aggravating factor that the transition of knowledge and technologies happens between different organisations: from research to industry. The different perspectives and intentions of research organisations and companies hamper the transition. Strategies to bridge the research VoD become increasingly important. We argue that research organisation would benefit from approaches which intervene during the idea creation – the so called fuzzy front end (FFE) of innovation. The FFE is defined as the early phase of innovation that concerned with finding ideas and teams. The successful management of the FFE can bridge the VoD – also for research institutions.</p> <p> We thus propose that universities and research (technology) organisations would benefit from a better understanding and management of the FFE. We suggest that studying the characteristics, role and potentials of scientific transfer mechanisms would benefit the exploitation of scientific research results. More particularly, the track welcomes papers that examine new tools, methods and strategies that ease the transition from research into society. We would like to invite contributions that inquire the following areas:<br /> (1) What new forms of R&amp;D management practices and/or transfer mechanisms are needed in research organisations to help researchers apply their knowledge to real-life situations and to support them enter into commercialisation agreements for their findings? How can the fuzzy front end contribute?<br /> (2) What role should universities and academic research play in order to bridge the areas of research, industry and society?</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/field--node--body.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--uid--page-article.html.twig x field--node--uid.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--uid.html.twig * field--entity-reference.html.twig * field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--uid.html.twig' --> <span> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'username' --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/user/username.html.twig' --> <span lang="" about="/rdmanagement2019/users/elodiegigout" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">elodie.gigout</span> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/user/username.html.twig' --> </span> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--uid.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--created--page-article.html.twig x field--node--created.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--created.html.twig * field--created.html.twig * field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--created.html.twig' --> <span> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'time' --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/time.html.twig' --> ven 01/03/2019 - Recently the field expanded to include the role of students (Siegel, Wright, 2015). The implementation in many regions around the world of policies to support the creation of start-ups based on university research results (Grimaldi et al, 2011), has led to a significant and continuous development of research on academic entrepreneurship since the early 2000s (Rothaermel, 2007, Schmitz et al, 2017). This stream of research has aimed in particular to highlight success factors for academic entrepreneurship and to characterize the mechanisms of knowledge transfer from the academic sphere to commercial applications (Colyvas et al, 2002, Shah, Pahnke, 2014). The elaboration of alternative strategies based on an analysis of regional weaknesses and opportunities assumes that the contribution from the entrepreneurial university to society is broader than the commonly studied factors such as patenting, licensing, and start-up creation. Its contribution relies on many aspects of academic engagement (Perkman et al., 2013; Filipetti, Savona, 2017) including teaching activities, supervision of PhD students, and student internship and placements (Landry et al., 2007). These activities are complementary to traditional technology transfer activities and contribute to the economic and societal impacts of university activities (Grimpe, Hussinger, 2013).</p> <p>The evolution of the field of academic entrepreneurship research encompasses a willingness to understand how entrepreneurial ecosystems could mere more conducive to the expansion of student entrepreneurship (Wright et al, 2017, Matt, Schaeffer, 2018, Nabi et al, 2017). In France for example, the ‘Pépite’ program, which allows students to benefit from the status of student entrepreneurs, testifies to this evolution. While 637 students had student-entrepreneur status in 2014, there were 3,576 in 2018 (Graveleau, 2018). This phenomenon has attracted the attention and interest of various stakeholders such as institutional actors, decision-makers, existing companies or academic researchers. However, the literature and theoretical studies on the contribution of students in diffusing knowledge in industry and society, as well as how to build entrepreneurial ecosystems prone to student entrepreneurship are still limited (Autio et al., 2018). Similarly, Schmitz et al (2017), in a systematic review of the literature on innovation and academic entrepreneurship, point out that although the literature on the field has been expanding for about 40 years, it is still fragmented and insufficiently theorized, calling for new research to understand the nature of innovation and entrepreneurship processes in universities.<br /> We invite papers that contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of knowledge diffusion driven by students. The various possible contributions include questions such as :</p> <p>- the variety of channels by which students contribute to academic knowledge diffusion (placements, internship, entrepreneurship…)<br /> - the specificities of students as entrepreneurs (motivation, detection and exploitation of opportunities)<br /> - the nature of the entrepreneurial projects carried out by students (high-tech entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship)<br /> - the building of ecosystems conducive to student entrepreneurs<br /> - challenges associated with education and student entrepreneurship<br /> - organizational challenges for higher education actors<br /> - international disparities in student entrepreneurship<br /> - how to measure student entrepreneurship<br /> - career patterns and prospects for student entrepreneurs</p> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/field--node--body.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--uid--page-article.html.twig x field--node--uid.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--uid.html.twig * field--entity-reference.html.twig * field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--uid.html.twig' --> <span> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'username' --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/user/username.html.twig' --> <span lang="" typeof="schema:Person" property="schema:name" datatype="">Anonyme (non vérifié)</span> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/user/username.html.twig' --> </span> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--uid.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--created--page-article.html.twig x field--node--created.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--created.html.twig * field--created.html.twig * field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--created.html.twig' --> <span> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'time' --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/time.html.twig' --> ven 01/03/2019 - 20:20 <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/time.html.twig' --> </span> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'core/themes/stable9/templates/field/field--node--created.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--field-hide-date--page-article.html.twig * field--node--field-hide-date.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--field-hide-date.html.twig * field--boolean.html.twig x field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/field.html.twig' --> 0 <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/field.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'field' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * field--node--field-date--page-article.html.twig * field--node--field-date.html.twig * field--node--page-article.html.twig * field--field-date.html.twig * field--timestamp.html.twig x field.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/field.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'time' --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/time.html.twig' --> 12 janvier 2019 <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/time.html.twig' --> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/field/field.html.twig' --> <!-- THEME DEBUG --> <!-- THEME HOOK: 'links__node' --> <!-- FILE NAME SUGGESTIONS: * links--node.html.twig x links.html.twig --> <!-- BEGIN OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/navigation/links.html.twig' --> <!-- END OUTPUT from 'themes/poly/templates/navigation/links.html.twig' --> Fri, 01 Mar 2019 19:20:43 +0000 Anonyme 397 at https://portail.polytechnique.edu/rdmanagement2019
