A form of entrepreneurship which is currently under the scholars' radar is the social entrepreneurship, which peculiarity is the pursuit of a social benefit. Apparently, though, few scholars have addressed how open innovation interplays with social entrepreneurship so far. However, open innovation could largely contribute to foster innovativeness of social start ups, especially in Emerging countries. The combination of the two topics posits a relevant challenge for future scholars, who are called to answer to question such as: how does open innovation could be implemented in social start-ups? How they foster Innovativeness in emerging Countries? Research results are rarely exploited to address the needs of society. At the same time, research-based innovation in emerging markets should constitute an important, mechanism to evolve national economies and serve global markets. We therefore suggest that the management of innovation is a focal point for better understanding the factors that hinder and foster transfer of scientific knowledge into innovation both on the level of individual organisations, and countries in general.

The known models of R&D and innovation have had limited success in emerging economies. Science, Technology and Innovation studies have mostly targeted different levels of analysis such as national, sectoral, and technological levels. Yet, the governance of the various STI systems in emerging economies has been rather less the subject of such studies. In addition, there is evidence showing that innovation in emerging economies often originate in innovative business models and rather less in the form of products or service innovation.

Consequently, we suggest studying the characteristics, role and potentials of innovation models in emerging economies. More particularly, the track would welcome papers that propose new models of innovation for emerging countries, examine the role of different innovation models in boosting economic development, the role of education, and the scientific transfer mechanism. In addition, the interdependencies between innovation, be it product, service, or business model innovation, and the formation and evolution of networks can provide insights to better understand and advance the current role of innovation in emerging economies. We would like to invite contributions that inquire the following areas:

(1) What makes innovation differ in emerging economies? How are different emerging markets adopting or giving rise to new R&D and innovation models? What lessons can be shared with industrialised countries?
(2) What kind of education for innovation contribute to develop those markets? What role should universities and academic research play in order to bridge the areas of research, industry and society?
(3) What new forms of R&D management practices and/or transfer mechanisms are needed to help researchers apply their knowledge to real-life situations and to support them enter into commercialisation agreements for their findings?
(4) How can complex decisions be managed at the organisation level? How can innovation practices at the organisation level influence the innovativeness of the affiliated supply chain networks in the context of emerging economies? What role do business models play in order to achieve supply chain networks innovation?

elodie.gigout ven 01/03/2019 - On the one hand, this is to generate growth and globalize firms originating from such counties. On the other hand, foreign multinational corporations (MNC) have also contributed to this process, by enlarging innovation mandates and increasing R&D and innovation activities in subsidiaries located in such countries.

Such changes have required the building of substantial technological capabilities, but this is not the entire picture. In order to move up from production capabilities to advanced innovation capabilities as basis for competitive strategy and growth, firms in emerging economies need to undergo a process of organizational change which is an enabling factor for dealing with systemic innovation processes which accounts for state of the art processes employed already by other companies but still goes beyond. The change of business firms’ strategic focus from the sole operational excellence required from imitators to the cross-functional learning and creativity required from innovators is a process of transformation of their own organizational architecture: governance, strategies, structures, decision-making processes and management routines.

Moreover, the organizational change challenge has to be undertaken in an open innovation environment, in which innovation requires capabilities for collaboration and networking from firms, research institutions and customers. Furthermore, as digital transformation is a global phenomenon which affects most business sectors in all industrialized economies, emerging country firms and institutions willing to become innovators need to address the challenge of innovating new digital services and new business models.

The World Bank study on the “Innovation Paradox” argues that an important obstacle to developing countries’ innovation and technological catching up lies on their lack of managerial capabilities, which are an essential complement to investment on R&D and innovation activities. Yet, while there has been substantial research on innovation capabilities and technological catching up in emerging country firms, concern with the challenges they face in developing innovation management and related organizational skill s have received little attention.

The proposed Special Track aims at addressing the above mentioned gaps, by calling papers which would bring about empirical and theoretical research focused on distinctive aspects of innovation management capabilities in emerging country firms and institutions. This could comprise, on the one hand, elements which are rather "internal" to business firms and public institutions, such as the diffusion of particular innovation management and organizational practices, or the challenge of changing culture and allowing for more ambitious innovation strategies or even the difficulties arising with the need to innovate new business models based on digital platforms. Papers also could address elements of emerging country firms and institutions' experience with open innovation, such as the particular nature of industry-university collaboration in emerging economies, or the challenge of creating entrepreneurial universities in this context or even the challenge of governing corporative engagement with start-ups. Furthermore we encourage papers which look at recent innovation management paradigms such as co-creation for innovation and the meaning of digital tools for the organization and steering of the innovation process and research teams.

          elodie.gigout ven 01/03/2019 - 18:53 1 10 janvier 2019 Fri, 01 Mar 2019 17:53:20 +0000 elodie.gigout 345 at https://portail.polytechnique.edu/rdmanagement2019 Track 5.4 - Global Innovations from and to emerging countries https://portail.polytechnique.edu/rdmanagement2019/programme/tracks-themes/theme-5-emerging-markets/track-54-global-innovations-and-emerging-countries Track 5.4 - Global Innovations from and to emerging countries

Max VON ZEDTWITZ, KTU, SDU & Bartlett & Ghoshal, 1989; Gassmann & von Zedtwitz, 1999; Doz et al., 2001; see Forsgren, 2013 for a review). The globalization of innovation within MNCs is one of the latest to evolve and one of the most recent to be studied (Boutellier et al., 1999; Doz and Wilson, 2012, Ben Mahmoud-Jouini et al., 2015).

MNCs have often targeted emerging new economies as new markets and, occasionally, as local capabilities improved, as hosts for new R&D and innovation (Vernon, 1979). It is, however, a recent phenomenon that developing nations without much history of advanced science and technology have made significant inroads in the global distribution of innovation. These countries -- with limited resources, huge needs and low-cost local competition -- have pushed global companies to seek new ways to innovate for these new markets. The notion of the “fortune at the bottom of the pyramid” (Pralahad, 2005) has reinforced the drive for frugal innovation. Performance and cost-reduction imperatives drove what has since been dubbed “reverse innovation” (Govindarajan and Trimble, 2012). Many traditional companies (such as Intel, ABB, or Siemens) have reassigned R&D control to centers in emerging countries, and innovation no longer flows exclusively from the center to the periphery but also in the other direction. The innovation process may be centered on an emerging market, but the process itself is intrinsically distributed and truly global (von Zedtwitz et al., 2015). Renault, for instance, discovered that the development of a low-cost, high-quality car delegated to its Romanian acquisition Dacia, exceeded local competencies. The Romanian project was discontinued, and ultimately the Logan model was engineered by Renault’s major innovation center in France (Jullien et al., 2012).

Even more recent is the emergence of global innovators indigenous to emerging economies (von Zedtwitz, 2005), and we are still in the early stages of this latest wave of globalization of innovation. Firms such as Huawei, Infosys, or Embraer are establishing themselves as leaders in their respective markets, and start using R&D resources outside their home countries -- and specifically in the industrialized home countries of those traditional MNCS – to globalize their innovation processes.

The rise of emerging markets (EMs) and their significant middle-class consumers have forced these organizations to reconsider not only their market's boundaries but also their go-to- market strategies. Differences between these EMs and the historical developed markets are so large that continuing to act as nothing has changed would unlikely lead to success (Meyer, Mudambi, & Narula, 2011). Indeed, EMs are characterized by specific constraints that did not exist in the context of advanced markets (AMs) (Govindarajan & Trimble, 2012). On the one hand, all these constraints change the demand to which MNCs were used to respond. EM customers are demanding products that are optimized for their own local environment. On the other hand, EMs today own a growing local system of innovation composed of very skilled labor force (Mudambi, 2011). New local MNCs are growing fast, representing at the same time potential partners and aggressive competitors on both local and advanced markets. These elements, coupled with the decreasing level of wealth in developed countries, represent the opportunity for MNCs to put forth novel new solutions of great value for EMs as well as for more advanced ones. In other words, MNCs now have to optimize their local R&D in EMs while also ensuring the global integration of the innovations developed in that context, i.e. to also successfully transfer EM innovations into AMs.

This aspect of global business has not been well examined yet, let alone understood in its various implications for international business and innovation theory. In addition to the R&D conducted by these newly emerging MNCs, this phenomenon will likely affect innovation by traditional MNCs, and the science and technology capacity of host countries in markets of various industrial maturity.

In the context, companies from countries with decades of global R&D experience are meeting MNCs that are beginning to follow this path. These firms often need to collaborate but compete as well, both indirectly in their home and host markets, and directly in joint efforts to develop technology standards or to deliver multi-partner solutions to local customers. More importantly, it requires knowledge management and integration skills, so that the valuable resources anchored in various parts of the firm and the firm’s networks can be leveraged despite the structural and cultural boundaries. This trend may prefigure a more networked, center-less and emergent process as the next challenge, and indeed the gateway to global innovation.

The management of global innovation therefore becomes only more important for firms and is increasingly at the heart of competitive advantage.
In this track we welcome papers addressing these issues. Some of the themes that are related are listed below :

- Internationalization of front-end innovation
- Coupling processes between markets and technological knowledge at the inception stage and emerging markets
- Cross-disciplinary pre-competitive globalization of R&D
- Open global innovation
- Localization of frugal innovation
- Reverse innovation as a source of strategic disruption
- Global vs. local innovations: exclusive or dual strategies
- Knowledge integration and combination across various R&D centers and subsidiaries
- Managing multi-actor networks of innovators in different countries
- Subsidiary initiated innovation and their diffusion
- New roles for entities in the diffusion of global innovation
- Reverse innovation
- Special-purpose subsidiaries for leveraging capabilities in unique environments.
- Open innovation in emerging markets

References

Bartlett, C.A.; Ghoshal S. The Silk Road connected the East and West for almost 2000 years providing the network of trade routes and the knowledge interactions that diffused great innovations such as paper, printing, and gunpowder. With the decay of East Asian civilization, the Silk Road declines and fades out. The technological knowledge links, between the East and West, become intermittent and unidirectional from the Western to the Oriental countries. The recent rise of East Asia has changed the context starting a reverse knowledge flows, which challenges the existing models. The Chinese Government launched, in 2013, the “One Belt One Road” initiative an ambitious program to re-connect Asia, Africa, Middle East, and Europe economically, politically and socially. Innovation collaborations and transfer are crucial factors so the track aims to explore the possible impacts of this “New Silk Road of Innovation”.

The dynamics of collaboration are classified into, at least, three perspectives. Firstly, the “New Silk Road” generates opportunities to develop new R&D networks because it involves a large number of countries with various research institutions that cooperate. Secondly, it may also have a far-reaching impact on how knowledge diffuses among Asia, Europe, and Africa. Usually, latecomer countries attempt to catch up acquiring production equipment based on which they learn manufacturing know-hows (or tacit knowledge). However, recently, the fast development of Eastern economies provides good “window opportunities” for traditional technology-followers to catch up or even leapfrogging, so their demands on lead-edge science and technology help to form the basis for science-technology based innovation locally, which involves the new ways of cross-border knowledge diffusions within these regions.

Finally, the “New Silk Road” represents an opportunity to explore East-West open innovation practices. Traditionally, iconic open innovation mainly happens in advanced countries (Westerns firms working with Western universities), and then spillover over to Asian firms which would continue to improve the process for cost reduction and manufacturing efficiency so that they can produce in scale, while Asian universities barely play with their own. The growth of national innovation system of Eastern economies provides new enabling factors for Eastern firms augment inbound and outbound knowledge flows with local universities for original innovations. Digital-age technologies (e.g. big data, smart manufacturing, 3D printing, etc.) also bring significant changes on how Eastern firms and universities can innovate together – the alliances, innovation ecosystems, and the triple helix along the “New Silk Road” are being significantly re-framed.

The “New Silk Road” poses new opportunities to studies on R&D networks, knowledge diffusions, and open innovation and in the track, we aim to explore some linked research questions.

          elodie.gigout ven 01/03/2019 - 18:40 1 10 janvier 2019 Fri, 01 Mar 2019 17:40:19 +0000 elodie.gigout 343 at https://portail.polytechnique.edu/rdmanagement2019
