The SPRINT group at LULI (Laboratoire pour l’Utilisation des Lasers Intenses, Ecole Polytechnique, France) invites applications for a 2-years post-doctoral research position in the framework of the GENESIS ERC grant led by J. Fuchs. The highly motivated and accomplished candidate will provide numerical modeling support to the experiments conducted within the ERC project, which include high-power laser experiments investigating high-energy ion acceleration schemes, ion interactions with plasmas and high-current neutron beam generation for applications in astrophysics and materials probing (for a general description of the group activities, see here). The research work will help design and interpret the experiments by means of two simulation techniques: (i) particle-in-cell (PIC) calculations, describing the hot-electron generation and ion acceleration that result from the laser-plasma interaction; (ii) Monte Carlo simulations, modeling the atomic and nuclear reactions involved during the large-scale transport of the high-energy protons through the neutron converter. PIC simulations will be performed using the CALDER code developed at CEA/DAM. Special emphasis will be put on optimizing, both in terms of energy spectra and charge, the fast proton source using a variety of target types and under ultra-high-intensity (>1022 W/cm2) conditions specific to the APOLLON and ELI-NP facilities. Besides conducting and analyzing high-performance numerical simulations, the postdoctoral fellow is expected to develop dedicated tools and/or improve the simulation codes at his disposal, by implementing new physical models or advanced numerical schemes. The candidate is expected to take the lead in writing original papers with high-impact journals highlighting her/his research, relevant to nuclear astrophysics and nucleosynthesis. The start date is flexible and the position is open until filled by a suitable candidate.
