The experiment will study the phase transition dynamics of Bismuth at high strain rates using laser-driven x-ray diffraction. Laser-driven ramp compression allows varying strain rates in the ns time scale, which is in the order of the characteristic transition time for the BI-BII solid-solid phase transition in Bismuth. Previous experiments have shown kinetics effects on the wave propagation at such high strain rates, but do not allow identifying unambiguously the underlying phase transition kinetics. By using pulsed x-ray diffraction we can identify in-situ new phases and follow the temporal evolution of the new phase. The will give new insight into the phase transition mechanism.
