ELFIE - Investigating ion energy deposition in magnetized HED plasma (J. Fuchs)
The aim of the proposed experiment if to investigate for the first time ion beam (keV-MeV) propagation in a magnetized HED plasma. Monochromatic ion (proton, alpha and heavier ions) beams, injected into laser-heated gas jets, of various temperatures and ionization degree, coupled to our magnetization platform will be used. The measured observable, i.e. the output spectrum of the ions propagated through the plasma, will be compared to models, including self-consistent simulations of the heating and ionization of the plasma. Obtaining such measurements will be in itself an important milestone in fundamental plasma physics as it will allow for the first time testing the theories and models.
