Matter and Radiation at Extremes, AIP Publishing, 2021, 63 (11), pp.876-886. Laser-driven neutron sources could offer a promising alternative to those based on conventional accelerator technologies in delivering compact beams of high brightness and short duration. We examine this through particle-in-cell and Monte Carlo simulations, that model, respectively, the laser acceleration of protons from thin-foil targets and their subsequent conversion into neutrons in secondary lead targets. Laser parameters relevant to the 0.5 petawatt (PW) LMJ-PETAL and 0.6-6 PW Apollon systems are considered. Due to its high intensity, the 20-fs-duration 0.6 PW Apollon laser is expected to accelerate protons up to above 100 MeV, thereby unlocking efficient neutron generation via spallation reactions. As a result, despite a 30-fold lower pulse energy than the LMJ-PETAL laser, the 0.6 PW Apollon laser should perform comparably well both in terms of neutron yield and flux. Notably, we predict that very compact neutron sources, of ~ 10 ps duration and ~ 100 µm spot size, can be released provided the lead convertor target is thin enough (~ 100 µm). These sources are characterized by extreme fluxes, of the order of 10 23 n cm-2 s-1 , and even ten times higher when using the 6 PW Apollon laser. Such values surpass those currently achievable at large-scale accelerator-based neutron sources (~ 10 16 n cm-2 s-1), or reported from previous laser experiments using low-Z converters (~ 10 18 n cm-2 s-1). By showing that such laser systems can produce neutron pulses significantly brighter than existing sources, our findings open a path towards attractive novel applications, such as flash neutron radiography or laboratory studies of heavy-ion nucleosynthesis. Review of Scientific Instruments, American Institute of Physics, 2021, 92 (12), pp.123506. An up to 15 T pulsed magnetic field generator in a volume of a few cubic centimeters has been developed for experiments with magnetized laser plasma. The magnetic field is created by a pair of coils placed in a sealed reservoir with liquid nitrogen, installed in a vacuum chamber with a laser target. The bearing body provides the mechanical strength of the system both in the case of co-directional and oppositely connected coils. The configuration of the housing allows laser radiation to be introduced into the working area between the coils in a wide range of directions and focusing angles, place targets away from the symmetry axis of the magnetic system, and irradiate several targets simultaneously. Nature Communications, Nature Publishing Group, 2021, 12 (1). Abstract Turbulence is ubiquitous in the universe and in fluid dynamics. It influences a wide range of high energy density systems, from inertial confinement fusion to astrophysical-object evolution. Understanding this phenomenon is crucial, however, due to limitations in experimental and numerical methods in plasma systems, a complete description of the turbulent spectrum is still lacking. Here, we present the measurement of a turbulent spectrum down to micron scale in a laser-plasma experiment. We use an experimental platform, which couples a high power optical laser, an x-ray free-electron laser and a lithium fluoride crystal, to study the dynamics of a plasma flow with micrometric resolution (~1μm) over a large field of view (>1 mm 2 ). After the evolution of a Rayleigh–Taylor unstable system, we obtain spectra, which are overall consistent with existing turbulent theory, but present unexpected features. This work paves the way towards a better understanding of numerous systems, as it allows the direct comparison of experimental results, theory and numerical simulations. (10.1038/s41467-021-22891-w)

Matter and Radiation at Extremes, AIP Publishing, 2021, 6 (6), pp.064402. We present the results of the first commissioning phase of the short-focal-length area of the Apollon laser facility (located in Saclay, France), which was performed with the first available laser beam (F2), scaled to a nominal power of 1 PW. Under the conditions that were tested, this beam delivered on-target pulses of 10 J average energy and 24 fs duration. Several diagnostics were fielded to assess the performance of the facility. The on-target focal spot and its spatial stability, the temporal intensity profile prior to the main pulse, and the resulting density gradient formed at the irradiated side of solid targets have been thoroughly characterized, with the goal of helping users design future experiments. Emissions of energetic electrons, ions, and electromagnetic radiation were recorded, showing good laser-to-target coupling efficiency and an overall performance comparable to that of similar international facilities. This will be followed in 2022 by a further commissioning stage at the multi-petawatt level. (10.1063/5.0065138)

Physics of Plasmas, American Institute of Physics, 2021, 28, pp.103302. We report on planar target experiments conducted on the OMEGA-EP laser facility performed in the context of the Shock Ignition (SI) approach to inertial confinement fusion. The experiment aimed at characterizing the propagation of strong shock in matter and the generation of hot-electrons (HE), with laser parameters relevant to SI (1-ns UV laser beams with I ∼10 16 W/cm 2). Time-resolved radiographies of targets were performed in order to study the hydrodynamic evolution. The hot-electron source was characterized in terms of maxwellian temperature T h and laser to hot-electron energy conversion efficiency η using data from different x-rays spectrometers. The post-processing of these data gives a range of possible values for T h and η (i.e. T h [keV] ∈ [20,50] and η ∈ [2%,13%]). These values are used as input in hydrodynamic simulations to reproduce the results obtained in radiographies, thus constraining the range for the HE measurements. According to this procedure, we found that the laser converts ∼10% ±4% of energy into hot-electrons with T h = 27 keV ±7 keV. Such electrons have enough low temperature that they should not be a prehaeat concern in SI. (10.1063/5.0059651)

Journal of Medical Genetics, BMJ Publishing Group, 2021, 58 (9), pp.602-608. Background Congenital nemaline myopathies are rare pathologies characterised by muscle weakness and rod-shaped inclusions in the muscle fibres. Methods Using next-generation sequencing, we identified three patients with pathogenic variants in the Troponin T type 1 ( TNNT1 ) gene, coding for the troponin T (TNT) skeletal muscle isoform. Results The clinical phenotype was similar in all patients, associating hypotonia, orthopaedic deformities and progressive chronic respiratory failure, leading to early death. The anatomopathological phenotype was characterised by a disproportion in the muscle fibre size, endomysial fibrosis and nemaline rods. Molecular analyses of TNNT1 revealed a homozygous deletion of exons 8 and 9 in patient 1; a heterozygous nonsense mutation in exon 9 and retention of part of intron 4 in muscle transcripts in patient 2; and a homozygous, very early nonsense mutation in patient 3. Western blot analyses confirmed the absence of the TNT protein resulting from these mutations. Discussion The clinical and anatomopathological presentations of our patients reinforce the homogeneous character of the phenotype associated with recessive TNNT1 mutations. Previous studies revealed an impact of recessive variants on the tropomyosin-binding affinity of TNT. We report in our patients a complete loss of TNT protein due to open reading frame disruption or to post-translational degradation of TNT. (10.1136/jmedgenet-2019-106714)

Nature Physics, Nature Publishing Group [2005-....], 2021, 17 (11), pp.1228-1232. Most water in the Universe may be superionic, and its thermodynamic and transport properties are crucial for planetary science but difficult to probe experimentally or theoretically. We use machine learning and free-energy methods to overcome the limitations of quantum mechanical simulations and characterize hydrogen diffusion, superionic transitions and phase behaviours of water at extreme conditions. We predict that close-packed superionic phases, which have a fraction of mixed stacking for finite systems, are stable over a wide temperature and pressure range, whereas a body-centred cubic superionic phase is only thermodynamically stable in a small window but is kinetically favoured. Our phase boundaries, which are consistent with existing—albeit scarce—experimental observations, help resolve the fractions of insulating ice, different superionic phases and liquid water inside ice giants. Matter and Radiation at Extremes, AIP Publishing, 2021, 6 (5), pp.054404. On the basis of equations obtained in the framework of second-order quantum-mechanical perturbation theory, the standard approach to the calculation of scattering radiation probability is extended to the case of ultrashort laser pulses. We investigate the mechanism of the appearance of plasmon peaks in the spectrum of the plasma form factor for different parameters of the problem. For the case in which scattering on plasmons dominates over scattering on electron density fluctuations caused by chaotic thermal motion, we derive analytical expressions describing the scattering probability of ultrashort laser pulses on plasmons. Together with this, we obtain a simple expression connecting the frequency of scattered radiation and the energy transmitted from the incident pulse to plasmon, and vice versa. In considering the scattering probability, our emphasis is on the dependence on the pulse duration. We assess in detail the trends of this dependence for various relations between pulse carrier frequency and plasmon energy. (10.1063/5.0065835)

Genes, MDPI, 2021, 12 (8), pp.1199. Diagnosis of myopathies is challenged by the high genetic heterogeneity and clinical overlap of the various etiologies. We previously reported a Next-Generation Sequencing strategy to identify genetic etiology in patients with undiagnosed Limb-Girdle Muscular Dystrophies, Congenital Myopathies, Congenital Muscular Dystrophies, Distal Myopathies, Myofibrillar Myopathies, and hyperCKemia or effort intolerance, using a large gene panel including genes classically associated with other entry diagnostic categories. In this study, we report the comprehensive clinical-biological strategy used to interpret NGS data in a cohort of 156 pediatric and adult patients, that included Copy Number Variants search, variants filtering and interpretation according to ACMG guidelines, segregation studies, deep phenotyping of patients and relatives, transcripts and protein studies, and multidisciplinary meetings. Genetic etiology was identified in 74 patients, a diagnostic yield (47.4%) similar to previous studies. We identified 18 patients (10%) with causative variants in different genes (ACTA1, RYR1, NEB, TTN, TRIP4, CACNA1S, FLNC, TNNT1, and PAPBN1) that resulted in milder and/or atypical phenotypes, with high intrafamilial variability in some cases. Mild phenotypes could mostly be explained by a less deleterious effect of variants on the protein. Detection of inter-individual variability and atypical phenotype-genotype associations is essential for precision medicine, patient care, and to progress in the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of myopathies. , 2021, pp.1-1. Coherent beam combining (CBC) opens the way to a new paradigm in laser architecture [1] . The quest to high peak and average power indeed faces several fundamental limitations (transverse amplified spontaneous emission in wide amplifiers, thermal management issues) which can be addressed when relying on numerous smaller scale reliable lasers coherently combined. Achieving CBC for a large number of amplifiers will not only rely on the use of an efficient phase-locking scheme but also on fiber management inside the laser head (such as accurate angular and lateral positioning, at µm or mrad levels), optics, and amplifiers management as well as laboratory environment control. An accurate diagnosis of the laser array is mandatory in order to get significant feedback on its design, and potentially improve or stabilize its behavior, either in phase-locked loop or in free run. Scientific Reports, Nature Publishing Group, 2021, 11 (1). We present structure and equation of state (EOS) measurements of biaxially orientated polyethylene terephthalate (PET, $$({\hbox {C}}_{10} {\hbox {H}}_8 {\hbox {O}}_4)_n$$ ( C 10 H 8 O 4 ) n , also called mylar) shock-compressed to ( $$155 \pm 20$$ 155 ± 20 ) GPa and ( $$6000 \pm 1000$$ 6000 ± 1000 ) K using in situ X-ray diffraction, Doppler velocimetry, and optical pyrometry. Comparing to density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD) simulations, we find a highly correlated liquid at conditions differing from predictions by some equations of state tables, which underlines the influence of complex chemical interactions in this regime. EOS calculations from ab initio DFT-MD simulations and shock Hugoniot measurements of density, pressure and temperature confirm the discrepancy to these tables and present an experimentally benchmarked correction to the description of PET as an exemplary material to represent the mixture of light elements at planetary interior conditions. , 2021. Due to their high cost of acquisition and operation, there are still a limited number of high-yield, high-flux neutron source facilities worldwide. In this context, laser-driven neutron sources offer a promising, cheaper alternative to those based on large-scale accelerators, with, in addition, the potential of generating compact neutron beams of high brightness and ultra-short duration. In particular, the predicted capability of next-generation petawatt (PW)-class lasers to accelerate protons beyond the 100 MeV range should unlock efficient neutron generation through spallation reactions. In this paper, this scenario is investigated numerically through particle-in-cell and Monte Carlo simulations, modeling, respectively, the laser acceleration of protons from thin-foil targets and their subsequent conversion into neutrons in secondary heavy-ion targets. Laser parameters relevant to the 1 PW LMJ-PETAL and 1-10 PW Apollon systems are considered. Under such conditions, neutron fluxes exceeding $10^{23}\,\rm n\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}$ are predicted, opening up attractive fundamental and applicative prospects.
(10.70675/a73d160bze33fz4e03zbd67zbbf726b9550f)

Brain - A Journal of Neurology, Oxford University Press, 2021, 144 (5), pp.1467-1481. Abstract Peroxiredoxin 3 (PRDX3) belongs to a superfamily of peroxidases that function as protective antioxidant enzymes. Among the six isoforms (PRDX1–PRDX6), PRDX3 is the only protein exclusively localized to the mitochondria, which are the main source of reactive oxygen species. Excessive levels of reactive oxygen species are harmful to cells, inducing mitochondrial dysfunction, DNA damage, lipid and protein oxidation and ultimately apoptosis. Neuronal cell damage induced by oxidative stress has been associated with numerous neurodegenerative disorders including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Leveraging the large aggregation of genomic ataxia datasets from the PREPARE (Preparing for Therapies in Autosomal Recessive Ataxias) network, we identified recessive mutations in PRDX3 as the genetic cause of cerebellar ataxia in five unrelated families, providing further evidence for oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of neurodegeneration. The clinical presentation of individuals with PRDX3 mutations consists of mild-to-moderate progressive cerebellar ataxia with concomitant hyper- and hypokinetic movement disorders, severe early-onset cerebellar atrophy, and in part olivary and brainstem degeneration. Patient fibroblasts showed a lack of PRDX3 protein, resulting in decreased glutathione peroxidase activity and decreased mitochondrial maximal respiratory capacity. Moreover, PRDX3 knockdown in cerebellar medulloblastoma cells resulted in significantly decreased cell viability, increased H2O2 levels and increased susceptibility to apoptosis triggered by reactive oxygen species. Pan-neuronal and pan-glial in vivo models of Drosophila revealed aberrant locomotor phenotypes and reduced survival times upon exposure to oxidative stress. Our findings reveal a central role for mitochondria and the implication of oxidative stress in PRDX3 disease pathogenesis and cerebellar vulnerability and suggest targets for future therapeutic approaches. Physical Review Letters, American Physical Society, 2021, 126 (1), pp.012027. In situ femtosecond x-ray diffraction measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were performed to study the liquid structure of tantalum shock released from several hundred gigapascals (GPa) on the nanosecond timescale. The results show that the internal negative pressure applied to the liquid tantalum reached −5.6 ð0.8Þ GPa, suggesting the existence of a liquid-gas mixing state due to cavitation. This is the first direct evidence to prove the classical nucleation theory which predicts that liquids with high surface tension can support GPa regime tensile stress. Scientific Reports, Nature Publishing Group, 2021, 11 (1), pp.8180. We analyze, using experiments and 3D MHD numerical simulations, the dynamic and radiative properties of a plasma ablated by a laser (1 ns, 10[Formula: see text]-10[Formula: see text] W/cm[Formula: see text]) from a solid target as it expands into a homogeneous, strong magnetic field (up to 30 T) that is transverse to its main expansion axis. We find that as early as 2 ns after the start of the expansion, the plasma becomes constrained by the magnetic field. As the magnetic field strength is increased, more plasma is confined close to the target and is heated by magnetic compression. We also observe that after [Formula: see text] ns, the plasma is being overall shaped in a slab, with the plasma being compressed perpendicularly to the magnetic field, and being extended along the magnetic field direction. This dense slab rapidly expands into vacuum; however, it contains only [Formula: see text] of the total plasma. As a result of the higher density and increased heating of the plasma confined against the laser-irradiated solid target, there is a net enhancement of the total X-ray emissivity induced by the magnetization. Astronomy & Astrophysics - A&A, EDP Sciences, 2021, 648, pp.A81. Aims. EXor-type objects are protostars that display powerful UV-optical outbursts caused by intermittent and powerful events of magnetospheric accretion. These objects are not yet well investigated and are quite difficult to characterize. Several parameters, such as plasma stream velocities, characteristic densities, and temperatures, can be retrieved from present observations. As of yet, however, there is no information about the magnetic field values and the exact underlying accretion scenario is also under discussion.Methods. We use laboratory plasmas, created by a high power laser impacting a solid target or by a plasma gun injector, and make these plasmas propagate perpendicularly to a strong external magnetic field. The propagating plasmas are found to be well scaled to the presently inferred parameters of EXor-type accretion event, thus allowing us to study the behaviour of such episodic accretion processes in scaled conditions.Results. We propose a scenario of additional matter accretion in the equatorial plane, which claims to explain the increased accretion rates of the EXor objects, supported by the experimental demonstration of effective plasma propagation across the magnetic field. In particular, our laboratory investigation allows us to determine that the field strength in the accretion stream of EXor objects, in a position intermediate between the truncation radius and the stellar surface, should be of the order of 100 G. This, in turn, suggests a field strength of a few kilogausses on the stellar surface, which is similar to values inferred from observations of classical T Tauri stars. (10.1051/0004-6361/202040036)

, 2021. This paper presents the results of measurements of fluorescing cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystals after being irradiated by an accelerated electron beam with energy of around 4 MeV. The measurements were performed using the PHIL linear accelerator at LAL (France). We observe linear dependence of the crystal emission to the electron beam charge and the isotropy of the photon emission. We provide the calibration coefficients of the photon emission depending on the charge of the accelerated electron beam for two crystals originating from two different manufacturers.
