Optics Express, Optical Society of America - OSA Publishing, 2015, 23 (25), pp.31991-32005. We present experiments dealing with a femtosecond laser-driven cluster-based plasma, where by analyzing the nonlinear phenomenon of satellites of spectral lines of Ar XVII, we revealed the nonlinear phenomenon of the generation of the second harmonic of the laser frequency. For performing this analysis we developed new results in the theory of satellites of spectral lines. From such lineshape analysis we found, in particular, that the efficiency of converting the short (40 fs) intense (3x10 18 W/cm 2) incident laser light into the second harmonic was 2%. This result is in the excellent agreement with the 2-Dimensional Particle-In-Cell (2D PIC) simulation that we also performed. There is also an order of magnitude agreement between the thresholds for the SHG found from the line shape analysis and from the 2D PIC simulations. (10.1364/OE.23.031991)

High Energy Density Physics, Elsevier, 2015, 17, pp.190-197. An experimental platform to study the interaction of two colliding high-velocity (0.01–0.2 c; 0.05–20 MeV) proton plasmas in a high strength (20 T) magnetic field is introduced. This platform aims to study the collision of magnetized plasmas accelerated via the Target-Normal-Sheath-Acceleration mechanism and initially separated by distances of a few hundred microns. The plasmas are accelerated from solid targets positioned inside a few cubic millimeter cavity located within a Helmholtz coil that provides up to 20 T magnetic fields. Various parameters of the plasmas at their interaction location are estimated. These show an interaction that is highly non-collisional, and that becomes more and more dominated by the magnetic fields as time progresses (from 5 to 60 ps). Particle-in-cell simulations are used to reproduce the initial acceleration of the plasma both via simulations including the laser interaction and via simulations that start with preheated electrons (to save dramatically on computational expense). The benchmarking of such simulations with the experiment and with each other will be used to understand the physical interaction when a magnetic field is applied. Finally, the experimental density profile of the interacting plasmas is shown in the case without an applied magnetic magnetic field, so to show that without an applied field that the development of high-velocity shocks, as a result of particle-to-particle collisions, is not achievable in the configuration considered. Scientific Reports, Nature Publishing Group, 2015, 5, pp.16301. Age at onset (AAO) of bipolar disorders (BD) could be influenced both by a repeat length polymorphism (5HTTLPR) in the promoter region of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) and exposure to childhood trauma. We assessed 308 euthymic patients with BD for the AAO of their first mood episode and childhood trauma. Patients were genotyped for the 5HTTLPR (long/short variant) and the rs25531. Genotypes were classified on functional significance (LL, LS, SS). A sample of 126 Brazilian euthymic patients with BD was used for replication. In the French sample, the correlation between AAO and trauma score was observed only among 'SS' homozygotes (p = 0.002) but not among 'L' allele carriers. A history of at least one trauma decreased the AAO only in 'SS' homozygotes (p = 0.001). These results remained significant after correction using FDR. Regression models suggested an interaction between emotional neglect and 'SS' genotype on the AAO (p = 0.009) and no further interaction with other trauma subtypes. Partial replication was obtained in the Brazilian sample, showing an interaction between emotional abuse and 'LS' genotype on the AAO (p = 0.02). In conclusion, an effect of childhood trauma on AAO of BD was observed only in patients who carry a specific stress responsiveness-related SLC6A4 promoter genotype. (10.1038/srep16301)

  • Experimental and numerical study of accretion-ejection mechanisms in laboratory astrophysics
    • Yurchak Roman
, 2015. With the development of high power laser facilities able to focus microscopic amounts of energy in less than 1 mm³ and in a few nanoseconds, it became possible to reach High Energy Density (HED) regimes of matter previously found only in planetary and stellar interiors. Laboratory astrophysics thus aims to study certain classes of astrophysical objects in a controlled environment of HED facilities using appropriate scaling laws. The modelling of hydrodynamic plasma flows in such experiments requires the use of numerical tools that will be presented in this thesis work. In particular, we will start by discussing the multi-physics Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) code FLASH that can be used to model laser driven plasma flows. Then, we will discuss the equation of state and opacities necessary to precisely model the experimental conditions. Finally, in a validation effort, a code to code comparison study for MULTI, DUED and FLASH codes will be illustrated with several test cases. In a second part, we will present experimental results related to the accretion-ejection mechanisms in astrophysical objects, and in particular, magnetic Cataclysmic Variables (mCV) and astrophysical jets. The former is a binary star system, where a white dwarf accretes matter from a companion star. The matter is then confined by magnetic field lines and falls with a supersonic velocity onto the white dwarf surface, generating a stationary radiative shock wave in the accretion column. This work is part of the POLAR project and lead to experiments performed on the LULI2000 (France), GEKKO XII (Japan) and Orion (UK) laser facilities. The second type of objects that were studied in this work are astrophysical jets, where matter is ejected from a central compact object, forming plasma flows collimated over large distances. In particular, we have performed an experimental demonstration of the Shock Focused Inertial Confinement (SFIC) mechanism on the LULI2000 laser facility.

  • EMISSION X DE PLASMAS CHAUDS HORS EQUILIBRE THERMODYNAMIQUE LOCAL CREES PAR LASER
    • Anne-Claire Bourgaux

New Journal of Physics, Institute of Physics: Open Access Journals, 2015, 17 (8), pp.083051. Quasi-static magnetic-fields up to 800 T are generated in the interaction of intense laser pulses (500 J, 1 ns, 10(17) W cm(-2)) with capacitor-coil targets of different materials. The reproducible magnetic-field peak and rise-time, consistent with the laser pulse duration, were accurately inferred from measurements with GHz-bandwidth inductor pickup coils (B-dot probes). Results from Faraday rotation of polarized optical laser light and deflectometry of energetic proton beams are consistent with the B-dot probe measurements at the early stages of the target charging, up to t approximate to 0.35 ns, and then are disturbed by radiation and plasma effects. The field has a dipole-like distribution over a characteristic volume of 1 mm(3), which is consistent with theoretical expectations. These results demonstrate a very efficient conversion of the laser energy into magnetic fields, thus establishing a robust laser-driven platform for reproducible, well characterized, generation of quasi-static magnetic fields at the kT-level, as well as for magnetization and accurate probing of high-energy-density samples driven by secondary powerful laser or particle beams. , 2015, 77, pp.Pages 29–33. Short intense pulses of fast neutrons were produced in a two stage laser-driven experiment. Protons were accelerated by means of the Target Normal Sheath Acceleration (TNSA) method using the TITAN facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Neutrons were obtained following interactions of the protons with a secondary lithium fluoride (LiF) target. The properties of the neutron flux were studied using BC-400 plastic scintillation detectors and the neutron time of flight (nTOF) technique. The detector setup and the experimental conditions were simulated with the Geant4 toolkit. The effects of different components of the experimental setup on the nTOF were studied. Preliminary results from a comparison between experimental and simulated nTOF distributions are presented.

Physics of Plasmas, American Institute of Physics, 2015, 22 (2), pp.022705. In this paper, we report on the quasi-isentropic compression of an iron sample using ramp shaped laser irradiation. This technique allows us to quasi-isentropically compress iron up to 700 GPa and 8500 K. To our knowledge, these data are the highest pressures reached on iron in off-Hugoniot conditions and the closest to the thermodynamic states thought to exist in Earth-like planetary cores. The experiment was performed on the Ligne d'Intégration laser facility at CESTA, Bordeaux, France. (10.1063/1.4907244)

Optics Letters, Optical Society of America - OSA Publishing, 2015, 40 (5), pp.709-712. We demonstrate a simple and robust passive coherent combining technique for temporal compression of millijoule energy laser pulses down to few-cycle duration in a gas-filled hollow fiber. High combining efficiency is achieved by using carefully oriented calcite plates for temporal pulse division and recombination. Carrier-envelope phase (CEP)- stable, 6-fs, 800-nm pulses with more than 0.6 mJ energy are routinely generated. This method could aid in the energy scaling of CEP-stable hollow-fiber compressor systems. (10.1364/OL.40.000673)

Journal of Physics: Conference Series, IOP Science, 2015, 653, pp.012145. Soft x-ray emission from CuXX L-shell lines emitted by a dense X-pinch plasma have been investigated with high-resolution curved Bragg crystals at different angles of orientation. Single shot time integrated spectra show clear evidences of polarization for the Ne-like spectral lines 2s22p6 1S0 → 2s22p53s 1P1 (λ = 12.570 Å), 2s22p6 1S0 → 2s22p53s 3P1 (λ = 12.8277 Å). The variation of the intensity ratio of these two well-separated L-shell lines is discussed in view of its application for suprathermal electron characterization under real experimental conditions of pinch plasmas. We demonstrated that the simultaneous use of two different polarization spectrometers (means 4 Bragg crystals) permitted a high level of confidence for the analysis of the variation of the line ratios due to polarization.
