British Journal of Surgery, Wiley, 2014, 101 (13), pp.1739 - 1750. BackgroundThe increased use of marginal donors highlights the importance of organ quality in transplantation and the identification of prognostic biomarkers. This experimental study investigated modulation of the hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) 1 pathway in kidney grafts in relation to different degrees of ischaemia. MethodsIn a porcine autotransplantation model, two different kidney graft protocols were compared: standard 24-h cold storage (CS) and 24-h CS preceded by 1h warm ischaemia (WI+CS). The renal HIF-1 pathway and tubular dedifferentiation were analysed in the early phase of reperfusion and at 3months. ResultsThere was a relationship between the degree of ischaemic injury and the outcome of the kidney graft. During the first week of reperfusion, WI+CS grafts showed a higher degree of injury. The observed tubular dedifferentiation was associated with delayed HIF-1 expression, and with loss of its role in transcription. In highly injured kidneys, deregulation of the HIF-1 pathway was also observed in the chronic phase, with reduced production of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) A, and upregulation of VEGF receptor 1 (Flt-1) and thrombospondin 1. In addition, these kidneys displayed altered kidney histology and decreased function. ConclusionThe HIF-1 pathway appears to be abolished early in response to severe ischaemia. A high degree of ischaemic injury also results in chronic activation of the HIF-1 pathway, diverting it away from the beneficial activation of angiogenesis. Further studies on the finely tuned balance of signals in this pathway may provide diagnostic biomarkers that can determine organ quality during kidney transplantation. (10.1002/bjs.9611)

Applied Physics B - Laser and Optics, Springer Verlag, 2014, 117 (2), pp.597-603. The dynamic thermal issues of the Yb:CaF 2 crystals within a multi-tens-mJ-energy multipass amplifier operating in the 20–100 Hz repetition rate range and pumped in quasi-cw regime have been studied at different timescales. Thermal response times of the system have been precisely investigated and analyzed, for the first time to our best knowledge in such amplifiers. This study includes a dual timescale analysis: in the long-timescale (second) with direct thermography mapping and in the millisecond range with thermal lensing in a pump-probe configuration. Very atypical positive lens behavior with fluorites will also be presented and discussed. This complete analysis is used to demonstrate the capability of Yb:CaF 2 multipass amplifier systems for operating the amplifier at 20 Hz with 57 mJ and 100 Hz with 32-mJ stable regime. Indeed, high repetition rate multipass amplifier has been realized for the first time with Yb:CaF 2 and for this energy. The results have been analyzed precisely to take into account the thermal issues and excellent beam quality, with a M 2 of 1.1. The pointing stability of 20 lrad has been measured documenting the reliability of the high repetition rate mJ amplifier. (10.1007/s00340-014-5872-4)

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2014, 20 (5), pp.7600405. We analyze quantitatively physical effects that limit the coherent combining efficiency in highly nonlinear divided-pulse fiber-based setups such as parabolic amplifiers or nonlinear temporal compression experiment. The impact of differential dispersion and non-equal replicas power is assessed using numerical simulations and compared with experimental demonstrations. We also point out optimization strategies to minimize the impact of these effects on the performance of ultrafast fiber sources. (10.1109/JSTQE.2014.2313920)

, 2014. Thermal and spectroscopic parameters suggest Yb-doped materials and in particular Yb:CaF 2 to be a good choice for diode pumped high power lasers [1-4]. In the frame of the Cilex-Apollon 10PW project we are developing new OPCPA pump sources based on those crystals [5]. We are presenting the last status of high-repetition rate multipass amplifiers based on Yb:CaF 2 developed in this project and how the exact measurement of the thermal lens allows us to optimize the design of the amplifier avoiding beam focusing and then to extract efficiently and reliably the energy without damaging the optics and access safely to a reliable stable regime within a 50 mJ-range.

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, 2014, 21 (1), pp.3100211. — We present the research advances on the development of 50-200 mJ energy range diode-pumped Yb:CaF 2-based multipass amplifiers operating at relatively high repetition rates. These laser amplifiers are based on diverse innovative geometries. All these innovations aim to design compact, stable and reliable amplifiers adapted to our application that consists in pumping ultrashort-pulse OPCPA (optical parametric chirped pulse amplifier) systems in the frame of the Apollon 10 PW laser project. The targeted repetition rate is in the range of 20-100 Hz with energies of few tens of mJ for the first stages up to 1 J for the final stage. An analysis of the specificities of Yb:CaF 2 is done to explain the different options we chose to fulfil these specifications. The critical points and limitations of the multipass Yb:CaF 2-based amplifiers are subsequently discussed. To overcome the encountered problems, different issues are investigated such as crystal optimisation, laser head geometry, thermo-optical dynamics or coherent combining techniques. Experimental results for different multipass configurations are demonstrated and discussed. (10.1109/JSTQE.2014.2344039)

, 2015 (1645), pp.228-236. The measurement of energy spectra of neutrons and gamma rays emitted by nuclei, together with charge particles spectroscopy, are the main tools for understanding nuclear phenomena occurring also in high power laser driven experiments. However, the large number of particles emitted in a very short time, in particular the strong X-rays flash produced in laser-target interaction, impose adaptation of technique currently used in nuclear physics experiment at accelerator based facilities. These aspects are discussed (Section 1) in the context of proposed studies at high power laser system of ELI-NP. Preliminary results from two experiments performed at Titan (LLNL) and ELFIE (LULI) facilities using plastic scintillators for neutron detection (Section 2) and LaBr3 (Ce) scintillators for gamma detection (Section 3) are presented demonstrating the capabilities and the limitations of the employed methods. Possible improvements of these spectroscopic methods and their proposed implementation at ELI-NP will be discussed as well in the last section. (10.1063/1.4909579)

Physical Review B: Condensed Matter and Materials Physics (1998-2015), American Physical Society, 2014, 90 (3), pp.035121. We present a model to describe thermophysical and optical properties of two-temperature systems consisted of heated electrons and cold ions in a solid lattice that occur during ultrafast heating experiments. Our model is based on ab initio simulations within the framework of density functional theory. The optical properties are obtained by evaluating the Kubo-Greenwood formula. By applying the material parameters of our ab initio model to a two-temperature model we are able to describe the temperature relaxation process of femtosecond-laser-heated gold and its optical properties within the same theoretical framework. Recent time-resolved measurements of optical properties of ultrafast heated gold revealed the dynamics of the interaction between femtosecond laser pulses and solid state matter. Different scenarios obtained from simulations of our study are compared with experimental data [Chen, Holst, Kirkwood, Sametoglu, Reid, Tsui, Recoules, and Ng, Phys. Rev.

The European Physical Journal. Special Topics, EDP Sciences / Springer Verlag, 2014, 223 (6), pp.1169–1173. Since the inception of the laser, there has been a constant push toward increasing the laser peak intensity, as this has lead to opening the exploration of new territories, and the production of compact sources of particles and radiation with unprecedented characteristics. However, increasing the peak laser intensity is usually performed by enhancing the produced laser properties, either by lowering its duration or increasing its energy, which involves a great level of complexity for the laser chain, or comes at great cost. Focusing tightly is another possibility to increase the laser intensity, but this comes at the risk of damaging the optics with target debris, as it requires their placement in close proximity to the interaction region. Plasma devices are an attractive, compact alternative to tightly focus extreme light pulses and further increase the final laser intensity. (10.1140/epjst/e2014-02169-y)

Physica Medica European Journal of Medical Physics, Elsevier, 2014, 30 (3), pp.117. Suitable instrumentation for laser-accelerated proton (ion) beams is critical for development of integrated, laser-driven ion accelerator systems. Instrumentation aimed at beam diagnostics and control must be applied to the driving laser pulse, the laser-plasma that forms at the target and the emergent proton (ion) bunch in a correlated way to develop these novel accelerators. This report is a brief overview of established diagnostic techniques and new developments based on material presented at the first workshop on 'Instrumentation for Diagnostics and Control of Laser-accelerated Proton (Ion) Beams' in Abingdon, UK. It includes radiochromic film (RCF), image plates (IP), micro-channel plates (MCP), Thomson spectrometers, prompt inline scintillators, time and space-resolved interferometry (TASRI) and nuclear activation schemes. Repetition-rated instrumentation requirements for target metrology are also addressed. (10.1016/j.ejmp.2013.09.002)

Physics of Plasmas, American Institute of Physics, 2014, pp.033101. We present results on laser-driven relativistic electron beam propagation through aluminum samples, which are either solid and cold or compressed and heated by laser-induced shock. A full numerical description of fast electron generation and transport is found to reproduce the experimental absolute Kα yield and spot size measurements for varying target thicknesses, and to sequentially quantify the collisional and resistive electron stopping powers. The results demonstrate that both stopping mechanisms are enhanced in compressed Al samples and are attributed to the increase in the medium density and resistivity, respectively. For the achieved time- and space-averaged electronic current density, ⟨jh⟩∼8×1010A/cm2 in the samples, the collisional and resistive stopping powers in warm and compressed Al are estimated to be 1.5keV/μm and 0.8keV/μm , respectively. By contrast, for cold and solid Al, the corresponding estimated values are 1.1keV/μm and 0.6keV/μm . Prospective numerical simulations involving higher jh show that the resistive stopping power can reach the same level as the collisional one. In addition to the effects of compression, the effect of the transient behavior of the resistivity of Al during relativistic electron beam transport becomes progressively more dominant, and for a significantly high current density, jh∼1012A/cm2 , cancels the difference in the electron resistive stopping power (or the total stopping power in units of areal density) between solid and compressed samples. Analytical calculations extend the analysis up to jh=1014A/cm2 (representative of the full-scale fast ignition scenario of inertial confinement fusion), where a very rapid transition to the Spitzer resistivity regime saturates the resistive stopping power, averaged over the electron beam duration, to values of ∼1keV/μm .

Physics of Plasmas, American Institute of Physics, 2014, 21 (1), pp.013102. It was recently shown that a promising way to accelerate protons in the forward direction to high energies is to use under-dense or near-critical density targets instead of solids. Simulations have revealed that the acceleration process depends on the density gradients of the plasma target. Indeed, under certain conditions, the most energetic protons are predicted to be accelerated by a collisionless shock mechanism that significantly increases their energy. We report here the results of a recent experiment dedicated to the study of longitudinal ion acceleration in partially exploded foils using a high intensity (similar to 5 x 10(18) W/cm(2)) picosecond laser pulse. We show that protons accelerated using targets having moderate front and rear plasma gradients (up to similar to 8 mu m gradient length) exhibit similar maximum proton energy and number compared to proton beams that are produced, in similar laser conditions, from solid targets, in the well-known target normal sheath acceleration regime. Particle-In-Cell simulations, performed in the same conditions as the experiment and consistent with the measurements, allow laying a path for further improvement of this acceleration scheme. Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), 2014, 346, pp.325-328. Although bipolar jets are seen emerging from a wide variety of astrophysical systems, the issue of their formation and morphology beyond their launching is still under study. Our scaled laboratory experiments, representative of young stellar object outflows, reveal that stable and narrow collimation of the entire flow can result from the presence of a poloidal magnetic field whose strength is consistent with observations. The laboratory plasma becomes focused with an interior cavity. This gives rise to a standing conical shock from which the jet emerges. Following simulations of the process at the full astrophysical scale, we conclude that it can also explain recently discovered x-ray emission features observed in low-density regions at the base of protostellar jets, such as the well-studied jet HH 154. Physica Scripta, IOP Publishing, 2014, 161, pp.0144060. We present an overview of some recent theoretical and experimental results obtained on the properties of iron and silica at conditions encountered in planetary interiors. The first part is concerned with the development of x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy in dynamical experiments using high-energy lasers as a tool to investigate phase transitions and structural changes at extreme pressure-temperature conditions for these two key constituents. The second part focuses on the development of a quasi-isentropic compression technique to achieve the pressure-temperature conditions anticipated in planetary interiors (3-10 Mbar, 5000-8000 K). The experiments were performed using the LULI, LLNL and LIL high-energy lasers' facilities. The experimental results are analyzed using first-principle simulations based on density functional theory.
