Glutathione is a redox tripeptide thought to be a redox buffer essential for cellular thiol-redox control and oxidative stress resistance. However, several recent observations indicate the presence of very distinct compartment-specific functions. Data will be presented on novel approaches to access to the cellular distribution of GSH and its sub- cellular functions. We will also present data on peroxiredoxins, a thiol-based peroxidase family that act as H2O2 signaling devices, antioxidants and, as recently observed, as chaperones involved in protein quality control and aging.
