Manas Vijay UPADHYAY

Department of Mechanics of the École Polytechnique, Palaiseau

Solid Mechanics Laboratory

Manas Vijay Upadhyay is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Mechanics of École Polytechnique (France) since January 2019, and is a researcher at the Laboratoire de Mécanique des Solides (LMS) of Ecole Polytechnique and CNRS. He received his Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering from the K. J. Somaiya College of Engineering, University of Mumbai, India, with first class honors and distinction. He received his "Master of Science" and "Ph.D." degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology (USA) in May 2012 and October 2014, respectively. He performed his post-doctoral research from December 2014 to August 2018 at the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland). In October 2022, he obtained the Habilitation to Supervise Research (HDR) from the Institut Polytechnique de Paris.

His research interests lie at the intersection between Solid Mechanics and Materials Science. During his doctoral and post-doctoral research, he developed multi-scale models working in synergy with advanced experimental characterization methods for the study of the mechanical behavior of alloys. Since becoming an Assistant Professor, his research interests have also extended to the development and use of new in situ experimental characterization techniques to study the microstructural evolution of various materials. Currently, he is working on the development and use of the Modeling, Simulation and Experimental Synergy (MoSES) concept to design microstructures obtained via the additive manufacturing process.

He was awarded an ERC Starting Grant 2020 (# 946959) to pursue his research in the field of additive manufacturing. This grant, as well as the support of the Coup de Pouce 2019 of the Fédération Francilienne de Mécanique (F2M), allowed him to build his own research group, the MoSES group, at LMS.

At École Polytechnique, he teaches several courses at the Bachelor and Engineer levels, notably in mechanics and thermics (Bachelor), continuum mechanics, plasticity and mechanics of coupled multi-physics systems.

Until October 2022, Manas Vijay Upadhyay (https://www.manas-upadhyay.com) has given 21 invited presentations at conferences and various institutes, and has published 25 articles in journals and books, including a review article and two invited contributions, one of them in the "Emerging Leaders 2021" special issue of the journal Modelling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering. He is a referee for many reputable journals, including Acta Materialia, Scripta Materialia, International Journal of Plasticity, Modelling and Simulation in Materials Science and Engineering, etc. In 2017, he received the "Outstanding Reviewer" award from Scripta Materialia.

He is an active member of many scientific societies, including SF2M, and has participated in the organization of some symposia.
