Title: Well defined complexes for cobalt catalysis

Short description of possible research topics for a PhD:

C-C bond forming reactions mostly relying on palladium catalysis is ubiquitous in organic synthesis. Nevertheless, the prohibitive cost of this metal limits its applications in industry. That’s why alternative catalysts based on cheaper metals, among which cobalt, have emerged has a hot topic.

In the laboratory, it was recently showed that cobalt salts efficiently catalyze a variety of coupling reactions in mild conditions. Nevertheless all these reactions are conducted with in situ generated catalyst, whose nature remains unknown. Therefore in order to better understand the mechanism of such reactions and propose more active catalytic systems we wish to develop well defined catalysts relying on the complementary skills of the two advisors; those complexes will be tested in cross couplings as well as reductive couplings.


Required background of the student: Organic and/or Coordination Chemistry and/or Catalysis.
