Program M2 at École polytechnique (2019-2020)

This program holds for the academic year 2019-2020.
(The program for 2018-2019 is still available here).

All courses will be taught in English.

Semester 1 (at least 30 ECTS)

Mandatory courses for all students:

The Standard Model - electroweak and strong interactions (8 ECTS)
Methods of statistical analysis and simulation, experiments and detector physics (8 ECTS)

Mandatory course for students who have not reached QFT 2 level:

Quantum field theory 2 (4 ECTS)

Important note: The level of the students in QFT may be tested. A review of the basics of QFT will be given in the first week of the semester, before the course actually starts.

Optional courses to be chosen in the following set:

Cosmology (4 ECTS)
Quantum field theory 3 (4 ECTS)
Hadron collider physics (4 ECTS)
Supersymmetry (3 ECTS)
Neutrino physics (3 ECTS)
Astroparticles and astrophysics (3 ECTS)
Physics of future lepton colliders (2 ECTS)
Aspects of Beyond the Standard Model physics (2 ECTS)

Students are free to construct their program according to their interests, but must comply with the following constraints:

  • the two first courses in the above list are mandatory for all students;
  • all students must have reached at least the QFT 2 level at the end of the first semester;
  • students who are not involved in the joint master (i.e. who did not take the M1 courses at ETH Zürich) must comply with the following rule: at least 30 ECTS must be validated each semester (cf Paris-Saclay rules governing Master's studies). This rule is replaced by the following more flexible one for the students of the joint master (and only for them): 120 ECTS must be validated over the two years; among them, at least 55 must be validated in the first year.

Programs built with courses that sum up to more than 30 ECTS are also possible (and encouraged). In that case, only exams among the optional courses with the best grades will be taken into account.

Semester 2 (at least 30 ECTS)

Optional course:

String theory (3 ECTS)

Master's thesis (30 ECTS)

The Master's thesis will allow students to conduct research on their own, in a well structured way and on an advanced level. The topic of the Master thesis will be in the domain of High Energy Physics. It will last for 4 to 5 months depending on the optional courses taken.
