Program M2 at École polytechnique (2017-2018)

This program holds for the academic year 2017-2018.
(The program for 2016-2017 is still available here).

All courses will be taught in English.

Semester 1 (at least 30 ECTS)

Mandatory courses for all students:

The Standard Model - electroweak and strong interactions (8 ECTS)
Methods of statistical analysis and simulation, experiments and detector physics (8 ECTS)

Mandatory course for students who have not reached QFT 2 level:

Quantum field theory 2 (4 ECTS)

Important note: The level of the students in QFT may be tested. A review of the basics of QFT will be given in the first week of the semester, before the course actually starts.

Optional courses to be chosen in the following set:

Cosmology (4 ECTS)
Quantum field theory 3 (4 ECTS)
Hadron collider physics (4 ECTS)
Supersymmetry (3 ECTS)
Flavor Physics (Neutrinos and Quarks) (3 ECTS)
Astroparticles and astrophysics (3 ECTS)

Special lectures by Distinguished Visiting Professor N. Wschebor:
Effective field theories in statistical physics and in high energy physics (2 ECTS)

Students are free to construct their program according to their interests, but must comply with the following constraints:

  • the total number of ECTS validated in the semester must amount to at least 30;
  • the two first courses in the above list are mandatory for all students;
  • all students must have reached at least the QFT 2 level at the end of the semester.

Programs built with courses that sum up to more than 30 ECTS are also possible (and encouraged). In that case, only exams among the optional courses with the best grades will be taken into account for the ranking of students.

Semester 2 (at least 30 ECTS)

Optional courses between the following choices:

String theory (3 ECTS)
Physics of future lepton colliders (2 ECTS)
Aspects of Beyond the Standard Model physics (2 ECTS)

Master's thesis (30 ECTS)

The Master's thesis will allow students to conduct research on their own, in a well structured way and on an advanced level. The topic of the Master thesis will be in the domain of High Energy Physics. It will last for 4 to 5 months depending on the optional courses taken.
