Applied research is structured around three academic and research Chairs maintained by the Department of Economics:
Chaire Développement Durable École Polytechnique-EDF
In January 2003, École Polytechnique and the École Polytechnique Foundation created the École's first interdisciplinary teaching and research Chair in sustainable development. As EDF was interested in the work in this area by the academic community, and wished to contribute to the teaching, it was a partner to creating the Chair.
Holder: Dominique Bureau, Professor at École Polytechnique and delegate general of the Economic Council for Sustainable Development (Conseil Économique pour le Développement Durable - CEDD) at the French Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy.

Chaire Finance Durable et Investissement Responsable
Created in 2007, the objective of the Chair of Sustainable Finance and Responsible Investment is to develop research methods that better identify and integrate the financial markets, in order to take the social and environmental issues studied into account.
The Chair's work focuses on two areas: firstly, the functioning of the financial markets and the impact of including Socially Responsible Investment (Investissement Socialement Responsable - ISR); and secondly, the partner businesses' strategy for social and environmental responsibility (Responsabilité Sociale Environnementale - RSE). The work carried out up until now has helped in particular to develop new valuation models that take into account the long-term environmental and social consequences of actions by businesses.

They lead to close collaboration between the world of teaching and/or research and that of industry. The heads of chairs are world-renowned specialists who coordinate the activities of their respective chairs and relations between École Polytechnique and partner companies.
