Geometric techniques for tensor computationsRésumé de Y. Qi : Tensors, as straightforward higher dimensional generalizations of matrices, appear naturally in many areas. In particular, rank decomposition, low rank approximation, and low rank completion have shown their power in signal/image processing, statistics, machine learning, and so on. On the other hand, not much is known about the theoretical foundation of tensors. Besides, as highly non-convex problems, many related computations are challenging. In this talk, we will introduce some geometric tools which can help us study certain computational issues, for instance, the uniqueness of rank decomposition and existence of low rank approximation. If time permits, we will also discuss how geometry assists us to design practical algorithms.
